Often people will tell new parents to “trust your instincts,” or “go with your gut.” That’s great for some, but for others that doesn’t always feel particularly comforting. Sometimes, our “gut” isn’t available, present, or clear. This may be because the transition to parenthood can feel overwhelming, or because our own experience being parented left us with a lot of course corrections to do. So, if trusting your instinct feels comforting, wonderful! But, if hearing that you should have a strong handle on all things parenting makes you feel crappy, quiet that noise. Even without the noise and with instincts intact, it is developmentally appropriate to be curious and maybe even, dare I say, insecure when bringing a new human into the world. That’s why in my work I like to find the space between giving enough support for relief, but not so much that it feels rigid and prescriptive. It's, of course, a balance.
